On Saturday, November 26, 2016, John Edmond Tanner of Beckley went home to be with his Heavenly Father. John was 84 years of age and had long suffered with Alzheimer’s disease. He passed peacefully at The Bowers Hospice House where he had received the very best of care.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, she had passed three years and three days earlier. He is survived by four children; Greg Tanner and wife Patsy, Steve Tanner and wife Donna, Lisa Chapman and husband Ronnie and Jennifer Tanner-Jenkins; four grandchildren; five...

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, she had passed three years and three days earlier. He is survived by four children; Greg Tanner and wife Patsy, Steve Tanner and wife Donna, Lisa Chapman and husband Ronnie and Jennifer Tanner-Jenkins; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Charles and wife Freddie; sister, Virginia Muskera

John was an active member of Faith Community Church before becoming ill. John taught school at Collins Middle School and Beckley College. He sold insurance for a number of companies before becoming a counselor for the WV Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. John also owned Dynamic Security as well as JET Enterprises. He had numerous Golden Glove and AAU Boxing matches and tournaments all over the state. He brought in the first “Tough Man” and “Tough Mountaineer” tournaments to southern WV. He served a number of years as a magistrate in Raleigh County before stepping down after becoming ill.

Friends may gather with the family Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home from 6-9pm.

Funeral services will be held 1pm, Friday, December 2, 2016 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor Sam Peterson officiating.

Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with his grandsons, John & James Chapman and Gary Tanner as well as Richard Pate, Gary Douglas Epling and Jim Aleshire serving as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers donations of sympathy may be made to Hospice of southern WV.
